Post-Lawsgate angst... anonymous January 5 2011, 22:06:50 UTC
So his whole life, DLaws has kept the "real him" under lock and key but now everyone knows the one thing he didn't want them to. How does he readjust to everything being ever-so-slightly off-kilter?

Some soul-searching angst please?

This would probably also work from a JLund POV, but I leave it to you, Anons - Do with it what you will

Scars are the strongest tissue. 1/1 anonymous January 8 2011, 12:20:44 UTC
David closes the video window two seconds after opening it and pressing 'play'. Who ever thought they could make him feel better by sending him this is a massive idiot. They're so stupid, these celebrity videos. Sweet stories to make kids feel better. And disappoint them in the end. He isn't a lost teenager. He's a grown man and he knows better than to believe such crap. It doesn't get better.
Growing older just makes it harder.

It just makes it more difficult to break away from the past and the lies and it just makes loosing people more difficult because they've been there longer. And people, they're not more tolerant after high school, just less loud about it. It all gets worse.

Maybe that's why James makes it all look so easy. David watches the younger man sleep, his hair in a mess, half hidden under a pile of sheets in the middle of the bed, their bed. James overwhelms him. Blows his mind. He cuts through the pain and the homophobia like it's nothing, like it can't hurt him. David can only watch in awe ( ... )

I'd hope James wins him over eventually.

Just perfect; exactly what I was hoping for, anon.

I had similar thoughts about the 'It gets better' videos - You just have to look at DLaws and Crispin Blunt to see that time itself isn't going to make things easier or people more understanding. You get stronger is so much more appropriate, in my experience.

"We've come this far."
"And we can go a bit further."
Also, this line was simply heart-shattering.

A/N: Gotta leave a WARNING here for implied violence against a child. You know if this isn’t your bag. Really a partial fill with added plot, so I hope OP doesn't mind.

It’s after his bedtime and David Laws is sitting on the back step in his parents’ garden, arms around his knees.

His parents haven’t been arguing, because they would never do that. It’s a principle with them, not to air their feelings in front of those who shouldn’t know them, and that includes never raising their voices when their son is in the house. But David’s nine years old, and he's not stupid and the air is particularly heavy with misery and resentment tonight and he just needs to get away from it, just for a few moments. He can’t say how he knows his parents aren’t happy; he just knows he’s not supposed to mention it ( ... )

Oh, poor DLaws. The stiff upper lip and burying the side-effects seem to be something DLaws has got quite good at. OP doesn't mind in the slightest. Especially when it's this well written

He hailed a taxi on Parliament Square and gave the driver James’s street name, omitting the number from force of habit. The taxi driver eyed him with recognition, probably already formulating his 'Guess who I had in my cab the other day' story. David settled in the back, staring out of the window in an attempt to avoid pleasantries, or possibly less pleasant discussions ( ... )

Ooh! I liked this, anon! I await your next installment!

Now you've got me wondering if David's a neat and tidy example of the kind. :D

Re-reading this from the beginning (all of three parts, I know, I really tax myself!) AND IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW. Mr Man in Pain is a werewolf and for some reason my brain is now throwing up quite large Harry Potter parallels was that really your intention.

I certainly wasn't expecting that - I was beginning to think that he was a drug addict!

Being a werewolf does not appear to be fun ): But I like to imagine there are Telegraph reporters terrified of dangerous wild animals...

You are not alone there, seriously. It was this fic that made me suddenly spot a connection and realise quite why I find DLaws so appealing. Clearly there's something about men with deep dark secrets which aren't their fault and for which people will dislike/disapprove of them unfairly...

Plus the dry senses of humour.

James was beside him in a single huge bound, eyes watchful and tail low.

David was barely aware of the brush of fur as he tried to smile reassuringly at him, but it hurt and his lips twisted unbidden into a rictus of pain as every muscle in his body clenched tight against the change ( ... )
