“I think we’ve done our part,” she remarked, “It’s down to you now, Michael.”
To Andy’s consternation, the pair of them trooped out leaving him alone with the man who baited and sneered at him across the Dispatch Box regularly.
“Do you mean to tell me, Gove,” he asked, incensed, “that when you spent all that time winding me up about Everton, you were really in love with me?”
“Yes!” replied Gove desperately, “We’d already … been together before that, but I couldn’t … I’d turned grey, like in The Lay of True Thomas. I was ashamed, and … I’m not proud of this, mind! I left you to deal with Old Scratch alone … oh PLEASE try to remember!”
Andy stared at him.
“You’re MAD, Gove!”
“How WOULD you do it?” Gove shot back, “Face the D-Devil? Come ON! We established that you know all about folk ballads.”
