When I was living in San Francisco, I was feeling homesick one day and as I was walking in the street a homeless guy came up to me, gave me a flower and said "someone as beautiful and young as you should not look so sad" and left. I spent the rest of the day smiling like an idiot.

That is a downright beautiful and poetic moment to carry, memory to have. It almost brought tears to my eyes. :)

Say screw it at my career as a teacher, go to Paris and take a course in graphic design.

I don't think that is crazy at all---something in me almost says it is a calling, because you're graphic talent, self-taught is just mind-blowing, and to get into a course where even more tricks of the trade would be yours for the taking? I honestly think you'd flourish in the graphic design/graphic arts niche. If teaching doesn't have your whole heart sometime, I think you should give some more thought to this second dream. :)
