CHARACTER NAME: Mercedes "Misty" Knight
FANDOM: Marvel 616
CHRONOLOGY: Current continuity; issue #2 of Shadowland: Blood on the Streets and past I Am An Avenger #1.
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: N/A
ALTER EGO: Misty Knight
BACKGROUND:
Misty Knight was a police officer in New York City. She graduated from the police adacemy with top honors, and worked as a patrolwoman with Rafe Scarfe as her partner. She met Colleen Wing early on in her career during a gun fight. Misty and Colleen became fast friends immediately afterwards, impressed with each other's skills, and this is a friendship that has lasted through the years, becoming so strong that Misty frequently refers to Colleen as her sister.
Presumably, Misty would have had a completely normal life, worked as a police officer, and then retired at an appropriate time if it hadn't been for the bomb. A group of terrorists had been attempting to bomb a bank in the city; when Misty found out about it, she intervened. She was able to retrieve the bomb, but it detonated before she could disarm it. The bomb blasted off her right arm, and Misty received a cybernetic replacement. The cybernetic arm obliterated Misty's chances of returning to patrolling with Rafe, and Misty resigned from the force entirely rather than be stuck behind a desk.
The loss of her job depressed her, and it was only through Colleen's encouragement that Misty became active again. Misty created a private investigation firm calling Nightwing Restorations, and Colleen became her partner. The two began taking on cases, and became known as the Daughters of the Dragon because of their advanced martial arts skills.
Colleen was also responsible for Misty meeting Daniel Rand, aka the Iron Fist. Colleen met and befriended Danny before Misty did, and because of her friendship with Danny, she was kidnapped by enemies of Iron Fist. Of course, Misty leapt to her friend's aide and, believing that Danny was the one reponsible for Colleen's kidnapping, attacked him. Danny was (thankfully) able to convince Misty of the truth, and she fought at his side against Colleen's kidnappers. Shortly afterwards, Misty and Danny began dating, and when Danny and Luke Cage created the Heroes for Hire, Colleen and Misty often lend them a hand when needed.
Then came the plant-Danny days, lord only knows what that was even. Misty and Dany broke up, and she began dating a police officer named Tyrone King. Of course, Tyrone King wasn't actually a police officer, but secretly Master Khan, an enemy of Iron Fist, in disguise. Khan struck a deal with the Super-Skrulls to murder Plant-Fist, and said deal was successful. Heartbroken, Misty broke off her relationship with Tyrone (who was really Master Khan...it's all very hideous and confusing...) and grieved for Danny. Plant-Fist was exposed, however, when the Super-Skrulls attempted to impersonate Danny. When the Super-Skrull was discovered, everything came out in the open, Plant-Danny, the skrulls and even Master Khan was found out. Misty immediately struck out to the K'un Lun with Colleen and Namor (for some reason) to rescue Danny from where he was being held prisoner by the H'ylthri.
Afterwards, Misty and Danny were back in a relationship. She helped him and Luke reinstate the Heroes for Hire, and for a while, things were all good between them. Of course, things can never stay good for all that long, and Misty and Danny broke up shortly after.
In the wake of her seperation from Danny, Misty concentrated her efforts on Nightwing Restorations and her partnership with Colleen. They took on a series of clients, but business was slow, and Misty was restless. She began working as a paralegal for Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson, which somehow led to a team up with Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist to rescue Jonah Jameson of the Daily Bugle from the clutches of the Scorpion. Danny left the United States after the fight on a question to "find himself." Worried for him, Misty and Colleen trailed him along his journey, protecting him and even accompanying him as far as K'un Lun, where they watched as Danny fought the Steel Serpent.
The battle with the Serpent seemed to put things in perspective for Danny, who returned hom and reestablished (for the ten millionth time) the Heroes for Hire. This time, however, the group was larger with more mercenary ties, funded by Namor, and he hired Misty and Colleen to help on certain cases. It was during this period of time that Misty was attacked by the White Tiger, who thought she could win Danny's love if she eliminated the competition, so to speak. Misty talked her down, explaining that Danny wouldn't leap into her bed if White Tiger killed Misty.
Nick Fury's Secret War happened shortly after this incident. Luke was seriously injured because of his involvement in said War, and Misty and Colleen immediately went to his side. Along with Danny, Misty and Colleen protected the hospital where Luke was staying, giving him time to recover and keeping Jessica and the baby safe from harm.
After that incident, Misty and Colleen began working as bonds-women. They'd lend bail money to small-time villians, and if said villians didn't appear in court, Misty and Knight would hunt them down and drag their asses to court. This led to the usual string of incidents, not least of which was the damaging of Misty's bionic arm. It was so badly damaged that it had to be replaced; Tony Stark gave Misty a completely new one, with the usual bells and whistles. It was a significant upgrade, and made a serious difference in Misty's effectiveness.
When the Civil War broke out, Misty and Colleen reformed (yep, you guesses it,) the Heroes for Hire. The function of the group this time around was to find and apprehend any who refused to register their identity with the government. Tony Stark funded the group, and despite the assurances that they'd only be dealing with unregistered villians, Misty and Colleen were soon facing off with heroes they'd once thought of as friends.
This incarnation of the group disbanded quickly, and it took it's toll on Misty and Colleen's friendship. For the first time, the pair of them did not return to working as partners, but went their seperate ways. Misty herself, after several false starts, fell back into a relationship with Iron Fist, and found herself engaged, and pregnant with his baby.
Or so she thought. After realizing that Danny's chi had created a false positive, their relationship crumbled, and they broke up once more. Currently Misty is working out of Hell's Kitchen, investigating a string of deaths connected to the ninjas of the Hand in Matt Murdock's Shadowland.
PERSONALITY:
Misty is a decisive personality. A very decisive personality. She picks a course of action and goes with it immediately. She doesn't waste time waffling or fussing with details. She sees what needs to be done, and she does it. No questions asked. Often times, she makes the decisions for the group she's in at the time, something which Colleen brings up recently, saying that Misty was always the decision maker, due to how very strongly Misty felt about most everything.
Along with the decisive personality goes stubborness. Misty will dig her heels in and refuse to budge an inch once she's made up her mind about something. You can follow along with her, or you can try to argue with her, but the fact is that she's going to do it, whether you like it or not. This has gotten her into trouble in the past, most notably with her incarnation of the Heroes for Hire during the Civil War, but Misty's never been one to let people talk her out of things, not when she's fully made up her mind to see them through to the end.
Loyalty is a Thing with Misty. If you earn her loyalty, then you can count on her being there when you need her. She will literally drop everything she's doing to come to her friends' aide. No matter what's going on in her life, what she's dealing with, if someone she cares about is in need, she'll be there, whether she's been asked to or not. She's very, very protective of the people she loves, Colleen and Danny primarily. Even when their friendships are on the rocks, or she's broken up with Danny, she still considers them hers, so to speak, and goes out of her way to watch out for them, even if that means just trailing them while they do dangerous things, on the off chance she can jump in and offer any sort of help.
Misty expects honesty from people. She tells things like they are, no dressing things up in fancy turns of phrase or covering things up with half-truths. She's blunt and totally truthful, and she expects everyone else to be the same. When she makes an agreement, she follows it through to the end, and fulfills all the terms of said agreement. If she's doing a job, then she makes damn sure it's done right and done well, not half-assed or half-done. She finishes what she starts, and she makes sure she gets results.
She's not fearless, but she's strong. It takes a lot more than going "boo" to get Misty to back off. Misty steps up to meta-humans twice her size and kicks their ass on a daily basis. And yes, she's afraid. Anyone with good sense would be afraid, but the thing about Misty is that she doesn't let that fear dictate what she does and how she reacts. She doesn't back down, not ever. Basically, Misty Knight will fuck your shit up if she has to, no matter how big and powerful you think you are, so watch your back.
POWER:
Apart from her bionic right arm, Misty has no canon superpowers.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
Well, ain't this a trip.
[The camera focues in on Misty, who's pinching the bridge of her nose and looking more than a little irritated. Her dog tags are clutched in her hand, and the name "Misty Knight" is visible for a minute before she drops her hand.]
Now, I know I've been a Hero for Hire, and I know private detectives can be employed by just about anyone, but this just takes the damn cake. Who the hell needs a hero so badly that they gotta grab one not even in their own dimension? And it's just damn rude to grab a girl without so much as a minute's notice. I didn't even get a chance to grab my guns. What's so urgent it can't wait two minutes? Suppose I'd been in the middle of something?
Rude, that's what this is.
And I'll bet good money that there's no way back. Or no easy way back. Don't even answer that, I know I'm right on that.
What I want to know is who's in charge of this operation, so I can kick his ass until it's nine different shades of black and blue.
[She pauses, toying with the tags, then snorts.]
Anyway. Anyone wanna explain what I'm supposed to be doing in the meantime, I'm all ears.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Sometimes, when she was recovering from one of those world-shaking battles superheroes tended to get wrapped up in, Misty would think about the bomb, running her fingers over the cool metal of her bionic arm and remembering.
She hadn't realized what had happened, not until she'd woken up in a hospital bed and tried to reach for something on the nightstand beside her bed. She'd screamed, then burst into tears, and sobbed until her throat was hoarse and she'd dehydrated herself. It wasn't one of her best memories, not by a long shot.
The doctors had told her the options. She was lucky, they said, to get the chance at technology like this. And it wasn't that she wasn't grateful. But for those first few days, lying there with a cold metal appendage and the broken pieces of her dreams around her, it didn't feel like any blessing Misty'd ever had before.
You can't be an active officer, they'd told her, and she'd just raised her chin and told them to stick their offer of deskwork where the sun don't shine. She didn't want to be some desk jockey, sitting in the bull pen and watching the beat cops come back from patrol, jittery with adrenaline and high on the difference they were making. She'd have died of jealousy, that's what would've happened.
She made do, did her work without a badge, and it was enough for her. Hell, it was more than enough most times, and after a while, she stopped grieving for the life she could've had. She laid it all to rest, those hopes of being a policewoman and getting promoted up through the ranks. She was cleaning up the city and helping people in her own way, and wasn't that the important thing? She got to see and do things she'd never dreamed of. She loved her life, every part of it. She'd made her peace with things, with the way things had changed on her.
Of course, dreams never do die.
It was only about an hour in the City when someone told her about the ImPort policeforce. And told her that they'd take her, bionic arm or no. She could have a badge again, that's what those words meant. She could be an officer again, and yeah, maybe it'd mean grunt work again, and all those damn forms and working all hours, but she'd be a policewoman again.
And that was what took the sting out of being stuck in this damn City. She had a shot at that old dream of hers again. This City hadn't felt like a blessing when she'd first arrived, but like the arm, it was turning out to be a damn good thing after all.
