Walking Dead

So I'm not part of The Walking Dead fandom, but I've learned recently that a LOT of people didn't like Lori. Um... Lori? Really? We didn't like LORI?! But Lori is awesome. I don't get it. Apparently most of America hated Lori. That's sort of like saying America hates Artie on Glee. He's not the most perfect character in the world, but he's ( Read more... )

I watched much of the first season while peeking around a corner from another room.

People seem to be complaining that she was a bad mom even though she willingly died a horrible death so her daughter could be born. I don't know how that makes her a bad mom.

I recommend a random sampling of reviews on televisionwithoutpity.com. My memory of her specific behavior that could imply "bad mom" is dim at best. Also, Carl gets a lot of groans from the viewing audience, mostly because -- well, this sums him up better than I could - http://www.collegehumor.com/article/6743808/10-reasons-why-the-walking-dead-should-just-kill-carl

Though I disagree with the "kill" part, because... you know, CHILD.

AMC isn't exactly known for their writing of likable women... (Skylar from Breaking Bad for instance). Lori was pretty manipulative, and was the character's greatest character flaw. It wasn't the 'lack of badassness' that hurt her, but there was some writing where she was directing Shane and Rick right at each other, which led to almost all of the tension in the group, and was coming off as a pretty awful harridan. Shane was bad on his own, and had his own flaws/issues, but she sure as heck didn't help things there.

Earlier on, Lori was flawed, but shown to have made decisions to do what was necessary to save herself and Carl (other than not being able to keep him in the house). She never really did much to change her mistakes or learn from them; heck, Carl is learning at least. She only got worse, and continued to make mistakes.

Her death is tragic not so much in that she's gone and will be missed, but because now it's going to drive Rick right up to the edge. Even in death she's terrible :p

I guess in the realm of bad decisions Lori's didn't ping me as particularly villainous compared to the rest of the team. I always liked her.
