For the past few months Gerard has had to practically drag Frank away from all things babies. It came to the point where the pair literally had no more money to spend, but of course that didn’t stop Frank from stopping at every kind of baby isle, cooing and trying to stash it in their shopping trolley.
Back when the pair was informed that a suitable woman had been found and was willing to give her baby up for adoption to the couple, Frank had been the giddy and most excited out of the two, cooing at everything to do with the new arrival and playing the doting father, already. When they had signed all the different kinds of paper work, to secure the adoption the pair took a large wad of cash out of each of their bank accounts and hit the mall. They purchased everything you could think of, every single thing a baby could ever need. Comforters, monitors, bedding, pacifiers, bottles, formula, diapers and more, everything the baby would ever need the pair bought.
Once the main items had been purchased, the couple went on to buying clothes for the new arrival. Jenny, the woman who was carrying their baby in which they were going to adopt, had already told the men that they were expecting a little girl, and Gerard remembered just what Frank’s face looked like when they listened to the news. His eyes were slightly glossy and his nose twitching, trying ever so hard not to cry just like a complete wuss. Of course Gerard wouldn’t have minded, and it made his husband that little more amazing.
Hitting the mall once more for clothes the pair knew they would be spending an awful amount of money, and so they did. Frank insisted on everything pink, even though the only colour in both the men’s wardrobe was black. He also insisted that they buy everything that had a cute little bunny on, or an adorable little kitten, or something like that. They also bought many little band shirts with tiny little iron maiden logos on, misfits skulls and bouncing souls embalms. Along with the shirts they also bought their little girl these tiny pink little converse boots, which Gerard starred at for hours when they got home, imagining their bundle wearing them for the first time, and of course they would probably drown her newborn baby feet, but it wouldn’t matter.
Their house was filled with newborn baby things by the time Jenny was around six months gone. They knew they only had around three months in order to arrange their small but more than sufficient house, and get the nursery finished. Gerard being an artistic fool, or so he called himself had visions of their little girls room ever since they started talking about adoption. He imagined baby pinks and sherbet lemons, swirls and animals and a gorgeous white crib. They knew that once they brought the baby home they would have her sleeping in her basket next to their bed, as it would be easier to feed her during the night, and comfort her if she needed reassurance that her parents were right there with her. They had also bought the most beautiful little wardrobe to put all of her mini things in, a real little girl’s room.
A month to go and the reality of adoption really started to set in for the couple. Frank kept walking in and out of the nursery dazed with all kinds of different baby clothes in his hand each time. Gerard only smiled each time he saw his husband wandering around with a different item each time, secretly admiring how excited he was. Gerard reacted in a slightly different way, as instead of walking around in his own little world he wouldn’t stop talking about the new arrival. Whenever his mom popped around to see how they were getting on with their collection he couldn’t stop talking about their little girl, how she would be there soon, so real and theirs. Mikey, Gerard’s brother visited their house often too, equally as excited as the couple about the new arrival, cooing over all of her things and of course, in Mikey fashion shoving the welcome home balloons they had purchased beneath his shirt and prancing around the house as ‘pregnant.’
It was two weeks before their baby’s due date when they got the phone call from the hospital, explaining that Jenny was in labour and the baby would be arriving soon. The pair stumbled about their house grabbing the pre packed bag Frank had insisted on having at the bottom of their bed, throwing their shirts and pants on and rushing out of the door. Gerard drives as fast as he possibly can, sticking to the limit but as his foot is drawn to the gas pedal like the strongest magnet and he gives in, pretty down harder and watched the pin on the speedometer flicker and rise.
When the pair arrived at the maternity unit at the local hospital Gerard parked the car clumsily and rushed towards the main reception. After Frank stumbles over their credentials at the main desk in order to find out what delivery suite the mother was in, they ran toward the elevator as their shoes skidded across the clean granite flooring. Rushing into the elevator Frank jammed his finger against the 8th floor button so many times Gerard had to pull his arm away. Keeping his hand on Frank’s bicep the pair calmed enough to share a short but tender moment together as Gerard leaned in and kissed Frank’s lips gently. As the bell sounded to let them know they had reached their floor, the pair parted and grinned.
Frank was not an idiot when it came to female anatomy, but what he had witnessed during the birth of their daughter was not what he expected and at that point, was very grateful he was in a same sex relationship. Of course when the blood had gone and all that was left was a gorgeous, tiny and completely vulnerable little girl. Jenny had been gracious and had held the baby for a while before telling Frank and Gerard that when she had the all clear to go home, they could take her. When she spoke Gerard felt something awful snap inside of him and for a while he felt responsible for being the cause of her pain, as it was obvious it was hard for the woman. Of course it was always going to be hard, she knew that and both Frank and Gerard knew, but she was tactful and once she had a few moments with the little girl to say goodbye, wished the couple the best of luck. They had all agreed that the couple would send a picture each ear of their daughter to Jenny, which she stated she would love.
It was again night time when the pair returned home but carrying another little person with them. Cassie Iero-Way. Closing the door silently Frank whispered to Gerard to take their daughter up to bed and that he would be up after he had made a few bottles up for her, which he knew she would need in the night. It took Frank a while to master the art of scooping, scraping, and dumping the spoonful of formula in to the small bottle but he got it after a few more scoops. He was far too paranoid and knew that if he gave her too much, her stomach would hurt. After making her bottles up and silently cooing to himself as to the fact that he actually was able to use the stack of bottles that had been sat in the kitchen for months and that he was able to break the foil seal around the formula.
When Frank arrived upstairs with the bottles in hand he found Gerard and their daughter curled up on the bed, Gerard staring down at their sleeping girl.
“You alright?” Frank asked as he settled the bottles down next to the bed and softly sat down.
Gerard nodded and smiled. “You want Cassie?” He asked, smiling wide now at the fact that their baby was there, with a name and she wasn’t just something that was a dream, she was real and she was theirs.
“No, you can put her down.” Frank smiled and nodded over to her basket which was at the end of the bed.
“You can tuck her in.” Gerard smiled and stood up slowly, making sure not to wake their tiny girl.
Frank couldn’t stop grinning as he took Cassie’s blanket and wrapped it around her, making sure to wrap her arms in so that she wouldn’t scratch herself in her sleep. He then pressed a kiss to his finger and stroked it across her small baby nose. Gerard did the same and soon, the men tucked themselves in to bed and started to reflect on just what had happened.
“We have a baby.” Frank stated in to the dark, holding Gerard close.
“We have a gorgeous little girl,” Gerard corrected Frank, smiling in the dark.
“We have to finish signing the papers tomorrow, adopt her properly.”
“Yeah, I can’t wait.” Gerard replied, shuffling closer.
Just as Frank moved closer to place a kiss on his husband’s lips, they heard a small cry coming from the end of the bed, Cassie.
“Who wants first night feed?”
Both men smiled and pushed the covers back, standing up, planning to feed her together.
