Frank and Gerard had told Cassie she was getting a very big surprise when her Daddies picked her up from Uncle Mikey’s that evening. She had been a terror that morning, refusing to get dressed or even eat her breakfast as she screamed and pointed to the direction of her bedroom. Gerard laughed and claimed she was just as lazy as her other Daddy, who gave him a scowl and picked their daughter from her high chair, starting to wipe drying pieces of cereal from her hands and hair. She was as every bit stubborn as Frank also, but at a year and a half of age, what kid wasn’t moody and had their parents wrapped around her very tiny, little finger?

“I’ll make you a deal, Cassie?” Frank picked up their child after wiping down her face and watched as she tipped her head to the side, confused. “If you’re a good girl for Daddies, get ready and go to see Uncle Mikey, we’ll get you a present!” Frank said, emphasising his voice on the last word. Cassie’s eyes grew large and her face began to throw away any sad emotion it had lingering around. Cassie nodded and from then on, did as she was told.

Once Frank had made the deal with his daughter she was as good as gold. She packed her things in to her little Scooby Doo carry bag and pointed to Frank to show him. “Well done Cassie baby!” He cooed as he picked her up, resting her on his hip as he bent down again to pick up her bag. “Now, to Uncle Mikey’s?” Frank asked, hopeful.

“Yeaaaaah!” Cassie dribbled and clapped her hands.

“Good girl! And when your Daddies come to pick you up, you’ll have a surprise waiting for you!” Chimed Frank, hoping that would bide them time to actually work today. Having a child and your own business, both at home, really didn’t mix very well. Frank and Gerard were sick of customers emailing them back claiming their printed art piece was covered in sticky, child like hand prints or that a customer had received a part of Scooby Doo’s body and not their very expensive art. Mikey was a complete bum, a college bum and had offered to take his niece for a few hours.

Not long after Frank had dropped their daughter off for the day and had sat back down at home to start packaging the work that needed to be sent to customers, Gerard started to complain.

“You do know we actually have to get Cassie something now, right?” Gerard spoke as he continued to sign the prints of work before handing them to Frank. They had their own little conveyer belt system working.

“Yeah, I know. I was thinking that we could maybe, just maybe, get her a kitten?” Frank winced and waiting for Gerard’s knee jerk reaction of...

“Yeah, good idea.” Gerard replied, turning to Frank to smile.

Frank looked at his husband with wide eyes. Whenever he had asked for a kitten, even before Cassie had come along Gerard had always said no. Frank kicked his feet, threw his weight around and even cried once, but nothing had worked.

“We can get a kitten?” Asked Frank, waiting for Gerard to laugh and say ‘Only kidding!’ but it didn’t come, Gerard only picked up his laptop from the floor and typed in the website Frank was forever looking on, Pre Loved.

Frank shuffled his chair closer to Gerard’s and rested his head against his shoulder, grinning quietly to himself.

It wasn’t long until the pair had found the right kitten for their family, and had called the owners up. They had agreed for the pair to visit the animal and even take it home the same day. Frank was giddy. He kept reminding himself that the kitten was for their daughter, and not for him but not amount of telling himself that was going to stop him and that excited feeling in the bottom of his stomach.

“She’s going to love this, y’know?” Gerard smiled down at the small carrier he had in his hand, carefully walking with it back to the car.

Frank couldn’t stop grinning. He nodded and as they got to the car, sat with their new kitten on his lap until they reached Mikey’s.

“Now Cassie, shall I ask Uncle Mikey if you’ve been a good girl?” Asked Gerard, and she nodded with a huge grin on her face, that cheeky grin neither parent’s or uncle could resist.

“Uncle Mikey, has Cassie been a good girl?” Gerard asked and Cassie giggled.

“She sure has, she’s been a great little girly today, haven’t you Cass?” Mikey stated, picking his niece up and hoisting her up on to his side. He then peppered kisses all over her face, making her shriek and giggle loudly.

“That’s good, Cassie gets her surprise then!” Frank joined in, walking over to Mikey to take his daughter and plant a huge, sloppy kiss on her small cheek. She giggled again and clapped her hands, before burying her face in to her Daddy’s neck.

“Tired girl?” Asked Gerard, cocking his head to the side to give her a goofy grin. Cassie nodded and rubbed at her eyes.

“Come on then girly, let’s get you home and you can see your surprise!”

They strapped their daughter in and made the drive home, the carrier still on Frank’s knee. Cassie tried to crane her small neck to see, but couldn’t make it out. They were thankful the kitty was still asleep. Once they reached home, Gerard unstrapped Cassie and took her into the house while Frank carefully took the kitten in. When he entered the living room Cassie was already sat on the floor, legs neatly crossed with a patient look on her face. Gerard was sat behind her on the couch, waiting for Frank to bring the new arrival in.

“Now Cassie, you were a good girl with Uncle Mikey, weren’t you?”

Cassie giggled and nodded.

“Right, well if you can be a good girl every time you go to see Uncle Mikey you can have your surprise, think you can do that sweetie?”

Cassie nodded again but this time her face was as serious as she could manage. Gerard wanted to laugh and pinch her cheeks, but he wanted to show her the surprise now.
That was Frank’s cue to bring in the kitty. Frank opened the living room door and walked forward into the room. He saw Cassie’s eyes widen and tilt her head once again, trying hard to make out what was in the carrier. Frank sat down opposite his daughter and settled the kitten down gently. He then opened the zips and let the front fall away, revealing the surprise.

Cassie squealed and the kitten jumped a little.

“Cassie baby, you have to be quiet.”

“And gentle!” Added Gerard quickly.

Cassie nodded again and reached her hands out towards the kitten. Frank picked the small white blob of fluff from the carrier and cradled it in his arms, much like he had done when they were first handed their daughter. He smiled down at the Kitten and then lowered his arms to show Cassie.

“There you are baby, Daddies got you a kitty!” Frank cooed, Cassie craning her neck and this time, was able to see. She smiled wide and blew spit bubbles in excitement.

“What shall we call her, sweetie?” Gerard asked as he moved from the couch and on to the floor so he could sit with his family.

Cassie didn’t even need any time to think, “carrots!” she beamed.

Frank and Gerard looked at one another and tried not to laugh. They knew why Cassie wanted to call it Carrots of course, it was her favourite vegetable. The pair couldn’t really complain though, they didn’t know another toddler that actually even liked the taste of carrots, let alone call their animal after it.

Frank smiled down at their daughter who was still transfixed with Carrots and smiled. She was reaching her hand out towards the kitten to stroke it’s head, and to both their delight, gently.

“Come on sweetie, shall we set it’s bed up at the end of the couch?”

Cassie nodded quickly and grinned. “Carrots!” she said playfully, still grinning at their new baby.
