"Hey, Ayanami."
The pilot of Unit-00 looked up from her book to regard her colleague. "What is it, Ikari-kun?"
The boy continued to stare listlessly out the window. "Why do you think they're called Angels? Do you wonder if they're really messengers of God?"
"I do not know, Ikari-kun," she responded softly as she closed the leather-bound tome and placed it back into her bag. "Does it matter?"
"What if..." he started, paused to collect his thoughts then continued, albeit a little hesitantly. "What if they are? What if this is divine punishment and we're just delaying the inevitable? What if whatever higher being is out there has decided we're not worth the trouble anymore?"
Rei frowned slightly, although the expression went unnoticed. "It is not our place to judge humanity, Ikari-kun. Our duty is-"
"-to defeat the Angels and defend humankind. I know." Shinji sighed darkly before finally turning to face the girl. "We have no say in this."
"Do you think humanity deserves to die for its sins then, Ikari-kun?" she asked almost reproachfully.
The Third Child had the decency to blush and turn his gaze away, although he remained adamant. "I mean, look at us, Ayanami. We're at war with things we don't even really understand yet people can still find reasons to fight and kill each other. Is there really anything worth saving?"
"You must believe so, Ikari-kun. Otherwise the despair will consume you."
"I'm not sure that hasn't already happened, Ayanami," he remarked bitterly, and she could think of no answer to that.
