It's baaa-aaaack! (Haven 5x01: See No Evil)

Sep 12, 2014 23:56

Well, after not-as-big-a-cliffhanger-as-S3 (IMO, anyhow), S5 has returned to start us off on what will undoubtedly be thirteen episodes of nobody getting to be happy, ever. Because that's kind of Haven's theme now.

Dear Mara,

You're kind of a bitch. I'm just sayin'.

Also, I am disappointed by the lack of accent, but I suppose we can pass that off as some kind of by-product of having memories of recent times. Still, woulda been nice.

Giving you the benefit of the plot-driven doubt for a handful of episodes,
Me

Dear Nathan,

Parking that truck, which EVERYONE in Haven probably knows on sight, on the middle of a deserted strip of beach is not what one might call 'subtle' when it comes to a stakeout. As a long-time member of the police force and former police chief, you really should know better.

But you called her Parker, something of which I am unreasonably fond, so you get a pass.

All the love,
Me

Dear Writers,

"Thinnies" is a really, really, really awful word. Please to not be doing anything like that again?

No love,
Me

I may have to start comparing Audrey Parker to Olivia Dunham, what with ALL THE PERSONALITIES. (Though I've gotta give the acting prize to Anna Torv, because she just nailed the subtle differences of each character to the point where I could freaking tell which Olivia it was when half-asleep on my couch, eyes closed, practically dozing. That, my friends, is talent.)

Does it not occur to anyone to track down someone from the Mi'kmaw (Mi'gmaw? Mi'kmaq? I ARE CONFUSED) people and ask them about the legends Cabot wrote about? First Nations peoples historically have a very strong oral tradition; they might be able to give more information than is in the journals.

So Jennifer may not be dead after all. Interesting. I am not holding my breath because non-Audrey Parker women don't fare too well on this show, but I kind of liked her so I do hope to see her again.

I was sure William would be back this season, but they've written it in such a way that maybe we won't see him after all. Haven't decided how I feel about that yet.

I sort of guessed Duke's role in the Troubles before they explained it all. My explanation was more that all of the Troubles in his blood had been re-dispersed with that energy blast that scattered them all (which I totally like better than their reason, I gotta say, even if that sounds a little self-centered), but at least I figured out it was his "fault".

I thought maybe Dave's the one who sealed the "thinnies", but the ad that aired at the end of the ep showing upcoming clips suggests probably not. So what's the deal with his morphine-inspired dreams? (Wouldn't it throw Duke for a hell of a loop if Jennifer's spirit/soul/what-have-you were in Dave now? *g*)

Speaking of, if they were both adopted out by Howard, could they be related?

I am glad to see Gloria back. She's hilarious.

Some things to get off my chest:
1. Howard did not actually say that Audrey (et al) was being punished. SHE asked if she was being punished and he said something like, "Certainly seems that way, doesn't it?" Which is NOT a confirmation, and actually (to me) suggests not so much. Or at least, not exactly or not entirely. I am holding on to this exchange as a reason to hope that perhaps Mara actually started to feel guilty towards the end and that is why this Totally Evil Person does not somehow leak through AT ALL in any of the imprinted personalities that come back over the years. If she's that bad, I wouldn't think that imprinting would hold that well.

2. The Lighthouse and See No Evil have pretty much said that Mara is from Somewhere Else. But when Audrey asked if she was even human, Howard told her that her problem is that she's all too human. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS.

(Maybe we need to disregard anything Howard said. Maybe he's a lying liar who gets off on lying to the personalities whenever they start to figure things out and we cannot believe a single word out of his lying mouth.)

3. WHERE THE FRAK IS JAMES ALREADY? Okay, tonight's plotline was not really conducive to addressing that particular point, but c'mon. Enough's enough. And I mean, Mara used Sarah to taunt Nathan a little; it wouldn't be a stretch for her to use James and, say, claim he was killed when the barn imploded in order to torture Nathan. (Which still wouldn't explain where he is, but at least he'd get a mention.)

So, yup. Here we are again: trying to make sense of this show and not being able to guess what's coming next. Kick back and enjoy the ride, folks.

And, as always, please no spoilers. =)
