Zangetsu had warned him. He'd warned him about the price for acquiring Mugetsu.
Ichigo hadn't listened. Or rather, he hadn't had the ability to choose whether to listen or not. Aizen had to be stopped, and he was the only one who could do it.
So he'd done it. He'd accepted Mugetsu, the power, the burden. And he'd succeeded. With Urahara's help, Aizen was defeated.
Only he'd passed out soon after in front of his friends, and woken up two weeks later to be told that he'd lost almost all his powers during his coma.
He'd just smiled and said that it was okay. He'd done what he was supposed to do, and now the world was safe.
Zangetsu had warned him, after all. Once you stood on the peak, the only destination was rock bottom.
