It was possible that he'd been oddly fascinated with her the moment he met her. There had been something about the girl on the stretcher, so broken and fragile, that had... resonated in some strange way with him. He hadn't been able to place it then.
The incident at her apartment - as embarassing as it was for him - had only exacerbated the feeling. She'd shown no sign of having been bothered by... that. It was eerie.
And then there had been their talk just before the battle with the fifth Angel. She'd told him, her voice full of conviction yet devoid of emotion, that he wouldn't die because she was going to protect him. She had made it sound so simple, in a manner similar to the way a child declared things they "just knew".
She had made it look so simple, holding the shield and not even screaming. (Or maybe he'd blocked out the sounds.)
But when he'd cracked open the entry plug to find her merely unconscious, when she'd apologized while he cried for not knowing what to do, the feeling in his chest swelled. He'd told her to smile, even as he did so to her.
She'd smiled at him then. The gesture was so faint, almost shy, but so warm, so undeniably... beautiful.
It was enthralling.
