I deteriorate

I still remember the time I saw myself naked in the bathroom mirror and thought (with surprise) "that's a woman's body". I don't remember how old I would have been, but it was the first time my self-image did not match my physical appearance, sometime around puberty.

Your post makes for an interesting comparison with my recent topic on aging. In principle, we both seem to accept age and change, but we still get taken back when we actually do notice it.

It's almost a mythic archetype, seeing the first few leaves of autumn and knowing that eventually winter will come. Perhaps we can focus too much on the pain the winter cold brings instead of the pleasant feeling of being under the blankets, wrapped in the toasty warmth that feels so uncomfortable in the summer.
