Got a rental place! Did not get the job!

Overall, it worked out pretty well, I'd say. I spent Saturday morning visiting four different places and basically fired off applications on Tuesday morning (Monday was a public holiday). And we got a call back on Wednesday!

We sign on Tuesday, and then we can think about moving in. I may end up taking a day ( Read more... )

Thanks! It's up North, in Preston! We'll plan a house warming when we've finished moving things in, you should come visit (though thinking about it now it's a bit of a trek from you, isn't it). We'll figure it out! And I will double-check on Mountain Goats availability, sorry, will let you know soon!

Yeah Preston's not much worse than going to work, really. Anything with a connect is pretty much 'more than an hour'. And a nice area, was looking at going out that way before my current place landed in my lap. Well I was looking more at Thornbury because it's a weird shape. That's probably not the best reason for moving somewhere but for the life of me I can't think of a better one.

Melbourne's trains sound like Bristol's buses. Getting to the other side of the city is two buses.

And trains are useless here.

I hope Wolfram aren't the sort of place to look down on you for asking questions. I've been lucky in that when I turn around and say "No, I don't know what that is or how it works or who I would have to talk to about that" people have been happy to explain (thereby passing their problem and responsibilities on, I guess).

It's not that no one answers questions - my team is very good about answering what they can, but the thing is the research I'm doing has always been an ad-hoc thing, nothing established and no processes to follow.

I'm basically making up my role, and figuring out the best way to stick things in a Word document.
