Message Board Nostalgia

Some of you that know me from college remember the Gear Factory forums. They were dear to me, because they were mine. Not content to install some free message board like every other E/N site at the time, I actually built my own. Twice ( Read more... )

Will, what language did you do your board in? What kind of fun functionality did it have other than the obvious stuff?

I have a new site project I'm debating on making one from scratch just for learning purposes.

I saw the new one on Brightfuse, very cool!

php and MySQL.

Most of what I did you could find on other boards, since they're all crazy packed with features.

I did have 2 fairly unique things though. Since it was a message board for a site that had articles published on it, every article published had a thread started automatically for it, where people could talk about it.

The other feature was for the OCD peeps. It was a little companion window (pop up) that you could leave open even when you weren't browsing the forums. The companion window would refresh every few seconds and let you know who was on, any new posts, etc.

I highly recommend trying to make one. It's a pretty comprehensive project, so you'd learn a ton about coding, databases, usability, layout, security, etc. And it's fun. Then again, I think you already have a popular message board. :)
