this sounds familiar to me... my grandmother suffered a stroke about four months before she actually died, and that was when i mourned her - and when she did kick off, i went to the funeral to support my dad rather than any personal reason.
i think i ended up going through the motions of the service so as not to have any more flack with that side of the family... these days i just don't see them at all.
After talking with my brother, it turns out that luckily no one is gung-ho about the funeral ritual. We're probably actually going to wait a few weeks and then have a little family get together to hang out and share stories. It's good that what I am interested in doing is also what everyone else is also interested in doing.
Memorials, especially ones done without the tyranny of a podium, make far more sense to me than the funeral ritual. I'm glad that your time with Steven & your cousin will not suffer from others attempting to foist obligation upon you.
