If you think something bad is going to come of it then you need to catch yourself and pull out of it Unless you honestly think you'll be happier, as you said, "lying."
I can't pretend to know what you're talking about past the reference to Stephen, but I can say that if you know something will make you unhappy, why repeat past mistakes?
