I know "The Black Doll," of course, but not the lonely one...

The Lonely Doll is a children's book by Dare Wright. She wrote and did all the photography for the book and had an interesting/twisted life(there's a biography that just came out called "The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll"). I read The Lonely Doll when I was little and loved the pictures(the story's about a doll named Edith who is lonely until she meets two bears and adventures ensue)and it's been a bit of an obsession. :)
Who/what is The Black Doll?

Cool story.

"the Black Doll" is kind of a recurring "character" in many of Edward Gorey's works. It's just a plain "doll" with no arms that's just kind of positioned in scenes, it doesn't interact with any characters. It kind of warns of bad things to come. Some of his stories are subtitled with the black doll, like this one:

awesome. I love edward gorey's illustrations, but have read only a few stories by him.
