EGM is being shut down.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21759

I had been wondering what was going on over at the Ziff-Davis offices over the past few years.  Slowly but surely, all the voices at EGM that I had come to know and respect had been vanishing.  EGM had been shrinking in size every month, and, even though it remained ( Read more... )

Now I feel old. I thought EGM would be around forever!

Although I haven't picked up a copy of EGM in years, I still have fond memories of being excited for the newest issue.

I loved their arcade coverage, no other magazine that I could think of had as comprehensive an arcade section as they did. And who could forget Quarterman?

I used to read Quarterman's section on 1UP.com, just not the same.

EGM had become the hard hitting magazine in the U.S. It got to the point that I trusted no one's reviews except theirs, and they always asked the tough questions of developers. In fact, quite a few publishers had pulled advertising because they were angry about EGM's low review scores of a particular release.

I'm actually having a really hard time dealing with this, lol. I feel that, in our lifetimes, books won't even be printed on paper. Everything will exist as digital data, and it makes me sad. I can't read 1up in the bathroom. I can't take it to work to read between customers. I can't read that interview with Hideo Kojima while I wait for my car to have it's oil changed. Sigh.

I played all the way through Mirror's Edge. I think they nailed the movement and controls, and when things flow they way they should, the game is amazing. But the problem lies with the super heavily armed cops that can take you down in two seconds. It totally breaks the flow of the gameplay. Also, the "Big Brother" style story I was hoping for fell flat. Still, I look forward to a sequel.

It's one of those cases where I'm willing to give it a nice amount of slack because it tried to do something truly different. I think another five months in development could have worked wonders on the combat and character models. Don't get me wrong, it could be much, much better, and it's not the game I was hoping for, but I'm glad it was made. A sequel has been greenlit, so hopefully, they can expand on the good stuff while cutting out the bad.
