I assumed Jane was not in it because she was a secondary character in one of the component movies, but that was before I was informed that scientist!guy was the same scientist!guy from Thor. So really, it would have been nice to have her. I did like Natasha in this, and Maria Hill <3 <3, and Pepper had one whole scene. And it's not that I don't like the guys and what they did with them, but. Etc. And again on race, Samuel L. Jackson is awesome incarnate, but still.
Have begun to fangirl the Hulk, for the first time ever in my life, for his response to Loki's monologuing. :D
Yeah, what they had was awesome. And I think there's a significant argument to be made that presenting a bunch of sexy dudes (and a not-particularly-objectified woman, especially for comics) doing stuff caters to the female audience quite effectively (Jeremy Renner's forearms...hnnggh!). And I really did like what Pepper got to do when she was around...and Natasha was great and Hill too...but there were some glaring missed opportunities.
By not using Jane in that particular role they avoided some problematic tropes...and then Natasha kind of rescued Selvig, except he kind of rescued himself...It made sense not to have a lot of the more tangential characters. Sif and Frigga and Hogun...and Rhodey, (OMG, I missed him too! *pouts*) can do cool stuff in sequels. And I can see where they were just focusing on the main crew. But to have a bunch of Asgard-related space physics and no Jane made no sense; it was a clear omission/substitution. Grrr...
I'll probably make another post about the view from my corner of fandom...
I really need to see this with subtitles (alas, the only downside to seeing it in theatre!) so I can catch all the dialogue...especially for things like Pepper's scene. In generally re: women in this movie, I agree with you: I liked what they had, they just needed more! Which is better than hating what they had, eh.
Once I posted about the scientist guy, I realized that yeah, if they had Jane do that we would have had yet another brainwashed!woman (and if the only female scientist was handily mindcontrolled...facepalm). It would be a lot of fun to see some of the secondary characters in later movies though. Apparently they are making absolutely boatloads of sequels and spinoffs and what have you, so there is hope.
(Have been reading rumblings of a Black Widow standalone movie. Don't think it's as sure a thing as I thought upon first hearing mention of it, but oh so very much DO WANT! Maybe they'll sit up and notice that people liked her in this. We can hope.)
