Call for Proposals for Translating Identities Conference at University of Vermont on March 5, 2005.
Translating Identity Conference
University of Vermont
March 5, 2005
DEADLINE FOR SUMBISSIONS: November 1, 2004
NOTIFICATION PROCESS BEGINS: December 1, 2004
Free To Be student organization of the University of Vermont is proud to announce the Third Annual Translating Identity Conference (TIC), a one-day conference focusing on gender and gender identities. Conference registration will be free and open to the public. This event hopes to reach out to the University of Vermont and broader communities and educate us all further about trans and gender issues and their intersections with other identities. With multiple panels to choose from at any time, some panels will be directed towards trans people, their partners, and allies; while others will be for those who are fairly unfamiliar with the transgender movement and the topic of gender identity. This conference seeks to translate gender identity to both the queer community and its allies.
Free To Be is the University of Vermont's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Alliance (GLBTA). We are a Student Government Association (SGA) recognized club and are entirely run by students. The mission of Free To Be is "To actively work on creating a safe space for people of all sexualities and individualities within ourselves, the GLBTA, and the University of Vermont community."
CONFERENCE PRIORITIES
· Raise awareness and advocate for the needs of the transgendered and genderqueer communities
· Promote and increase visibility of the transgendered and genderqueer communities
· Strengthen the political skills of gender rights advocates and activists
· Make connections across the diverse communities affected by gender civil rights
PROPOSAL REVIEW
All workshop and panel proposals will be reviewed by members of the TIC selection committee. Everyone is invited to submit a proposal for a presentation, panel or workshop. Considerations for selection include:
· Relevance to gender politics, policy, strategy and organizing
· Content and panelists dealing with diverse groups and communities
· Presenter qualifications and experience
· Diverse race/gender/class/age representation among panelists and presenters
· Overall strength of the submission
All submissions will receive a response. Affiliation with the university does not guarantee that your proposal will be accepted. The final selection of workshops will be released by January 1, 2005. Free to Be reserves the right to reject any proposals that do not support the mission of the student organization, the conference planning committee, or the university.
PRESENTER RESPONSIBILITIES
TIC will be held on the University of Vermont campus. Although we ask for a donation, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Presenters are asked to volunteer their time and services. Free To Be will attempt to provide travel and accommodations. However, any assistance, including monetary, is limited and will be provided on a case-by-case basis, as determined by the selection committee. Presenters will receive information about local hotels and transportation options in the presenter information packet.
