i want neat, thick braids that i can tie back for work. how to do this?

How many braids do you want? If it's more than one and you want to tie them together when you tie them back it would be easier to not put them in anything before you start braiding. Or are you asking how to braid?

as many as possible. i don't really want to tie them together, just back. i'm asking if anyone's seen a successful example of this style.

I have. Alicia Keys had that hairstyle at one point. Not sure if she still does, but I'm sure you could find a picture of it.

And I've seen a few black guys with it. The looked really hot. Unfortunately, that picture you posted was too dark for me to be able to tell what you look like.:(
