Thinking really hard about getting a dog... I'd really like the company, just not sure about how the cats will react, and hafta get a puppy or young dog, so he can be trained not to eat them. Eeesh, is complicated, but maybe not impossible...I'd love a malamute, but might be too high energy... maybe a Dalmatian or a black lab... reasonably mellow, ( Read more... )

I had a black lab a while back. Well, it was a designer imposter (a mutt), but it looked JUST like one. Really really. He was great though. Very great. They are nice.

Get a black lab. Decent size, friendly disposition, does well with family and they don't tend to be over-protective like some terrier breeds and sheppard breeds.

Black labs are by far one of the easiest to maintain dogs there are with the combination of coat and temperment toward strangers typically.

Great Pyrenees are really cool dogs too. =D Huge though and love to rough house, so you'd need a yard of sorts and the kids would have to learn how to deal with it. Not a good choice until the kids are a bit older.. and taller.

Thanks, I have been leaning more in that direction... had a golden lab growing up who was great, very intelligent & mellow. So, might go golden or black lab.

yeah, overall I'd recommend a yellow/black lab too... they're the easiest to teach. A sheperd would be good, but they can be a bit head-strong. My personal fave bread is Malamute, though... ;}
