Superheroes with disabilities?

So today I started nannying! It was awesome and I'm already sure I'm going to have a super fun summer and really enjoy the kids. There are three, and the oldest has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which means he's pretty severely physically disabled. He was wearing some Superman accessories so I asked if he liked Superman, and it came out that the reason ( Read more... )

This is why comic books are awesome :') ♥ I can't think of any others apart from the ones mentioned in the comics... I'm excited for you to tell him about all these superheros :3

Totally! It's a great, diverse genre with so much to dig into. ♥ I've already started talking to him a little about Xavier and Oracle and he's intrigued! We're going to watch some Xavier on YouTube soon I think. :)

The coolest thing about Babs-as-Oracle is that she is a team leader (Birds of Prey) and she also has fighting skills. She even retained her upper-body acrobatic skills. And then on TOP of that, she is a total computer geek. All-round awesome. Also, there was a recent comic where she talks about choosing not to get operated on/WayneTech/robots/magic to heal her. Her idea was that if normal disabled people don't have access to these supernatural healing methods, then she won't either. Or something? Her reasoning is debatable, but interesting nontheless ( ... )

I also really like characters like Oracle and Xavier who use their brains to do things because my boy isn't super into studying right now and I'd love to see that change. :) Teaching him that brain power can be a superpower is good for him, I think!

Cyborg is a good one! Although right now, I'm hesitant to talk about him, largely because that's a possibility that's not realistic for this guy and would sound really tempting. Granted, it's not a bad thing to have fantasies about things we can't have . . . hmm, I'll have to think about this one more.

X-Men seems like a really good one to tap for characters in this case. I'm excited to keep learning more. And someone just linked me to the new Silver Scorpion--awesome!!

Hi! My friend was out of town, but he just got back to me and offered this link:

http://furiousfanboys.com/2010/06/10-superheroes-with-a-handicap/

He also writes: there's a couple of amputee characters who have cybernetic parts, Cyborg from DC and Forge from Marvel. There's a character called Penance who's mute, and at one point her sister M (both are Marvel characters) had autism, but I think they changed that. Oracle, potentially the coolest character in all of the DC universe, is in a wheelchair (she used to be Batgirl). Echo from Marvel is deaf.

I hope that this helps!
