Books I Should Read

Apr 01, 2008 23:47

I want to read more books.
What books would you recommend to me? What books do you just know I'll love, (reminder: I hate tragedy. Really. Just don't.) or do you think 'everyone' should read?
I've put 1984 on my list because a friend is consistently shocked that I haven't read it. :P

Women in Love. And Lolita.

The Messenger, Markus Zusak. Weird, but good. Anything else by him is good too, although the Book Thief is almost heartbreaking enough to be a tragedy.

Anything by Haruki Murakami. Again, weird but good. Something of an acquired taste, maybe, but I love what I've read.

I did once compose a list of "Books I Would Recommend to Everyone", but it was on paper so I think it's lost.

Sir Apropos of Nothing. Fantasy satire, it's utterly hilarious.

If you don't like tragedy I wouldn't have recommended 1984 -- it's not TRAGIC, per se, but it really doesn't end very happily.

At any rate. Books everyone should read, that also have happy endings. "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus" by Orson Scott Card is a really terrific one. It's a futuristic science fiction novel, and also an alternate history novel, with the two parts going back and forth until they join together in one coherent storyline. I love this book to bits and have reread it far too many times. And, um, I'm afraid that's it for my inspiration on recommendations right now.

Hey, awesome... I picked up Pastwatch at a used book store a while back but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Had no idea if it was any good, so I'm glad to hear that someone likes it so much. Maybe that will be next on my "books I own but haven't read" list. :P Ha.

Yeah, totally do read it! I've heard some complaints that some of the history (and some of the proposed history) isn't entirely realistic, and that things work out too improbably well at the end, but it's a good enough story that I really don't care.

Well, I need to read 1984 for cultural reasons I guess. It's constantly referred to and has things based on it.
