I finished watching Saiyuki season 1 on Wednesday, and I waited 1 day before I started season 2.  I don't think its just the subbing on this one, cause i'm completely confused period.  The subbing is totally like reading a book and not a comic, yet sometimes the words are in the wrong order ( Read more... )

Then what do they say "kuso" means? Or "aho" or "shimata"? Or "teme"?

I'm curious if they don't have cuss words or if they don't like to talk about having words that can be used as cuss words? Like, "this word is considered rude (like swearing) so we censor it on TV."

I cannot imagine a single language that does not have cusswords or vulgar expressions or phrases to express personal contempt or frustration. However, I CAN imagine that such words may not have an exact equivalent to any given English cussword. But they'd still be the sort of words or phrases that mothers would scold children for using them.

It's sort of... human, to have words like that. People seem to need words of that sort, to describe the person who shortchanged them at the store, the guy that cut them off, the ex girlfriend or boyfriend that was caught sleeping around, or just to express their dismay and shock at watching someone ram their parked car.

For a good time looking into our linguistic past at insults that don't seem too vulgar by today's standards and yet once had a lot of bite, just Google "Shakespearean insults" sometime. Seriously.... "milksop"?!
