The Way It Ought to Be
Jared/Jensen, PG, 1300 words, kidfic. Going to the fair.
Jared groans when he hears the alarm going off, burrowing his face into Jensen's shoulder. Some mornings, just waking up with Jensen is so novel and fantastic that it's worth getting up.
But most mornings, it's just fucking early.
"Dude, you get up so much earlier on weekdays," says Jensen, sounding amused. "How is this worse?"
"Don't remind me," Jared says. "Weekdays do not exist on weekends." He rolls on top of Jensen. "Why are we getting up again?"
Jensen laughs and shoves him a little, trying to dislodge him. "Dude, you're huge, get off me."
"I am huge," Jared agrees, leering.
"No," says Jensen, extracting himself from under Jared. "We have to take Ian to the fair. We don't have time for that look."
Jared always knew Jensen liked him, at least some, but when he discovered Jensen was into him, like, really into him, enthusiastically all about sex with him, it was awesome.
"Am I gonna get reward sex later?" asks Jared.
"You never asked for reward sex before," says Jensen. "I remember when you came out with us out of the goodness of your heart."
"I was still hoping I'd get laid," Jared teases. He rolls out of bed and pads over to the dresser, leaning up against Jensen as he finds his jeans.
It took about two weeks for Jensen to move in, after they hooked up. They talked to Ian about it, having two houses, having two families, and Ian acted like he'd been expecting this for months.
"Couldn't we get one big giant house?" he asked, making a face. "For everyone?"
Jensen and Danneel exchanged a look.
"Dad and Jared need their own space for a while," Danneel said. "But maybe later."
Jared really wouldn't mind a giant house with the five of them, as long as he and Jensen got his own room. It'd be easier for the kid, and as Jensen loves to point out, the kid has him whipped. It's a little sad.
"Hey, stop spacing out," says Jensen, snapping his fingers in front of Jared's face. "The kid's probably already awake and waiting on the porch for us."
Jared laughs. "Your kid's a weirdo."
"Hey, he's your kid too now," Jensen points out, and Jared can't help grinning.

The fair is one of Ian's favorite places--he and Jensen go every year, as a father-son tradition, and Jared was touched when they both asked him to come along.
It's about an hour's drive, but the day is nice and the roads aren't too busy, and Ian chatters away the whole time in the back seat, telling Jared all the things they'll see--"they have a petting zoo with llamas--and all the food they're going to eat--"dad said we could get one of everything this year because you'd be around to eat the leftovers!"--and what games he was best at--"last year I won a sombrero at the ring toss, but this year I'm getting the big stuffed panda for Sophia!"
It's been strange, the last couple months, adapting to being with Jensen around Ian. Ian already thought they were dating, so he doesn't really realize anything has changed. He'll call them out for being embarrassing if they hold hands or snuggle in public, and while he doesn't seem to mind, exactly, it makes them self-conscious.
They pile out of the car and Ian stations himself between them, taking Jensen's right hand and Jared's left. "Come on, we have to get breakfast!"
"This is why we had to come early?" Jared asks, giving Jensen a look.
"It's tradition," says Jensen, with a slightly embarrassed smile.
Ian manages to stay between them for about three minutes, and then he takes off running and Jensen tucks himself into Jared's side, snuggling up so shamelessly Jared has to laugh.
"I always wished you were at this," Jensen mutters, sounding a little embarrassed. "Danneel comes sometimes, but it's not the same."
Jared finds himself smiling, and then beaming, and squeezing Jensen's shoulder. "Hey, I'll be here from now on."
Jensen looks ridiculously pleased. "Cool."

They're watching Ian on the bumper cars--Jared wanted to get in there, but he's too big for the cars, which is lame--when Jared hears, "Mr. Padalecki?" and turns.
It's a gaggle of his students--Jeremy and Denise from first period, and Grace and Erin from third--and they're looking curiously at him, their eyes occasionally darting down to where his fingers are laced with Jensen's.
"Oh, hey guys," says Jared, giving them a smile. "What's up?"
"Um, not much, we're just checking out the stuff," says Jeremy. Jeremy isn't the most articulate kid ever.
"Yeah, us too," says Jared. "You girls having fun?" he asks.
"Jeremy won me a goldfish," says Erin, holding it up with a flush.
"We had to keep the kid from winning us one," says Jared, and then kind of regrets it. He gives them an apologetic smile. "Man, where are my manners? This is my boyfriend, Jensen Ackles, and his son's somewhere around, ramming other kids."
"Hi, Mr. Ackles," the kids chorus, a little nervously. The unspoken you're gay? is hanging in the air, and Jared doesn't really know what to do with it. He's here with his boyfriend, it's fairly obvious he likes guys.
"Hi," says Jensen, also sounding kind of awkward. "You guys must be J--Mr. Padalecki's students?"
"Dude, you can call me Jared. They know I have a first name," Jared teases.
"Yeah, we're his students," says Erin.
"Well, it's nice to meet you guys."
"Dad," calls Ian, sounding annoyed. "Jared! I just hit this guy really good! You're not watching!"
Jensen snorts. "We're such irresponsible parents," he says, shaking his head. "It was nice to meet you guys," he adds, giving the students a smile and turning back so he can watch Ian do whatever it is Ian does.
"Yeah, we'll just, um, get out of your hair," says Grace. "See you on Monday, Mr. Padalecki."
"See you, guys," says Jared, waving, and once they're gone, he lets his forehead thunk down on Jensen's back.
"Come on, it wasn't that bad," says Jensen, laughing.
"Awkward," Jared singsongs.
"Well, yeah, totally."
"And by Tuesday everyone will know I'm gay."
"Sorry," Jensen says, sobering up and sounding really remorseful.
"I don't mind, exactly," says Jared. "I just wasn't expecting it." He smiles. "And high school students are so mature about homosexuality."
Jensen laughs. "They're getting better, I think. And now maybe those girls will stop hitting on you."
Jared groans. "I doubt it, but it's nice to dream."
Ian gets a great slam in on another kid, and Jared whoops and cheers so much Jensen actually drags him in for a kiss just to shut him up.
So, naturally, the next time it happens, Jared does the exact same thing.

Jared ends up having to carry Ian back to the car--he fell asleep on the Ferris Wheel, and they didn't have the heart to wake him. Jared tucks him into the back seat and carefully puts his seat belt on, watching as the kid slumps forward, hair getting in his eyes. Jared pushes it back with a small smile.
When he closes the car door, Jensen's leaning against the passenger side, looking at him thoughtfully.
"What's up?" Jared asks.
"I love you," says Jensen.
Jared swallows hard. It's not like Jensen has never said it before, but it's still kind of shocking, every time. Just because he wanted it for so long.
"I love you too," Jared says, when his voice works again. "Any particular reason you're bringing this up?"
Jensen shrugs, smiles. "Do I need one?"
"No," says Jared. "Not really."
Jensen tugs him in for a kiss, slow and long and easy. "Thanks for coming with us today," he says, when he finally pulls away.
"Happy to," says Jared, smiling. "Same time next year?"
Jensen laughs. "It's a date."
