Jared is kind of a slob. Which means that any time Jensen needs anything from his room, it's a terrifying slog through piles of shit to a goal he's not even sure exists. It's entirely possible that whatever he was looking at was crushed under the weight of Jared's stuff.
Today, he was looking for Jared's copy of The Great Gatsby, which is hardcover and doesn't have its book jacket anymore, like all of Jared's books, so finding it is like looking for a needle in a stack of needles covered in piles of dirty laundry and death.
Which is how he finds the diary.
He wouldn't read it, except the first entry is dated from high school, and says Dear Jensen at the top, and how is he supposed to stop reading something that's addressed to him

"it is like looking for a needle in a stack of needles covered in piles of dirty laundry and death" Sounds like my kids' rooms - or, you know, mine when I was their age
Also? ...instead he does the stupid thing and throws it mindlessly. And hits Jared. This is the kind of thing that happens to me, but I like your ending better.
