"Yes," says Gilbert, coming back in the house and sitting down . "It's no use. The drive is completely snowed in. I don't think there's any way I'll be able to go into town today."
Anne smiles at that. "For I'm sure none of the horses would be able to get through the snow," she teases.
"Not safely," Gilbert declares cheerfully. "It wouldn't do for the doctor to be injured. Much safer for me to stay here, so that if anyone needs me, they will know where to send for me."
"And if there happens to be the lucky coincidence that you may stay home with your wife this morning--"
"Well, that is very lucky indeed," Gilbert agrees.
"You're incorrigible."
"I'm a very responsible and upstanding doctor," he corrects. "And I'm sure we'd be much safer and warmer if we went back to bed."
