I have a confession to make: I am possibly the entire person in the world who doesn't like Quakers. Seriously. I googled "criticism of Quakers" and the only thing I go was this, which at least didn't make me feel totally insane, since a lot of the criticisms he relates are ones I share ( Read more... )

It gets a little trickier when interdependence intersects with the Geek Social Fallacy, at the end of which people who should have been excluded from the group for creepy behavior are nonetheless held in the group because shunning is bad and wrong. And hell, I had a narrow escape a bit ago from a situation where a group had gotten the mindset that they should receive attention and friendship in exchange for geekly social interaction. They were putting the cart before the horse, but once I got far enough to look at it calmly, it reminded me not so much of a cult as a multi-level marketing scheme of friendship. Like, a very sophisticated social strategy to cater to a basically unhealthy and antisocial mindset ( ... )

I've not had much experience with Quakers, but I imagine we would not get along.
