My bedroom at my parents' house is actually silent like that sometimes. I never really noticed it when I was a kid, but it drove me crazy when I came home from college. (I've also "heard" it when I went spelunking on a boyscouts camping trip)

It's my understanding that the buzz you hear in your ears isn't just your imagination. When it's quiet enough you can hear your blood flow, and the ambient noise of the nerves that carry sound to your brain.
I've been fascinated sometimes to notice that, when I make a slight noise (rub my hand on my pillow or something) to drown stop the buzz, the buzz feels louder than the noise that drowns it out.

I've always thought of sound waves in the air as a bit like the movement of water in the ocean. Humans walk around in sound waves like fish swim in the sea. The utter lack of sound is as disorienting as if all the water held still for a moment.
