I would argue that the lesson to be learned is that the amount of money you make is directly proportional to how much you charge for your product, regardless of how awesome that product is...
Well, it's certainly true that Sun never charged enough for anything they made to make a profit, but it's not like they had a choice in the matter - in all cases, their prices were set by the market. All the stuff they eventually gave away for free, they once tried to sell, and nobody bought it. All the stuff they succeeded at selling, they had to sell at market prices and they never managed to create a profit margin. Sun did a colossal amount of business at those prices, it just didn't do them any good.
I just find it remarkable that any company could make such a large net contribution to the wealth of humanity and simultaneously fail to do anything at all for the wealth of their shareholders.
