So I went to Istanbul in March of 2006, in the midst of the outrage about that cartoon of Abraham that appeared in that Dutch (or Danish?) magazine. I didn't have any trouble there at all, but the day after I left some buses were blown up. So I don't know. It's an incredible experience, and I highly recommend the city (it's so different from anywhere else I've ever been). The plane ride will probably be hellish (I flew from Prague, which was like...3 hours or so, not bad at all). But I think it's worth it, as long as you follow the tenets of common sense re: being a Westerner in a Muslim country that is currently experiencing a lot of political upheaval.
Stepping inside the Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque alone would be worth the price of the plane ticket. Trust me.
