Oh my goodness! They actually said that?? I am always going to be suspicious of any service that comes my way now! "Does this person genuinely want to help me or just think I desperately need some cheer because I am just homely and sad looking?" At least you just laughed in the back. I probably would have made some indignant comment and made the teacher feel bad....
I think the teacher realized what she'd said, because she sounded all flustered. I wouldn't think too badly of her. I just think it was pretty amusing, in any case. And, yeah, I turned to my friend (who also happens to be my visiting teacher), and said, "Is that why you want to visit? You think I'm ugly and in need of service?" Oh, the laughter!
One day in seventh grade one of the most popular girls in school walked right up to me and talked to me. This was surprising in and of itself, but then she said she wanted to go to the mall with me that Saturday. I thought I was in heaven, my ship had come in... then sank when she said it was so she could buy me real clothes. She was sincere and I declined. Service for the ugly in action.

Although you should have taken her up on it if she were willing to buy you new clothes. I love new clothes!
