Regarding the black rams: well, I think the color's obvious. I doubt the game writers intended to make some oblique joke about his "wearing the horns", so I'm going to guess it's just a desire to avoid the idea of the "black sheep"?

And black rams are a low-level enemy in the game (they're the only sheep who fight back when you try to harvest them for life force) but sheep are a sort of running joke in the series. I suspect that's the simplest explanation, as much as I like the 'black sheep' associations. :p
