Right, as most of you will be aware I quit my job last week. Why? Short answer - I was not enjoying it. So, now I have more time and my finances which had briefly recovered are on the verge of nosediving again. But I have a plan. Ooh good luck with that - self-employment is a good thing!

There's a private tuition place on Bradfield Road at Hillsborough you might be able to work with and it's possibly also a good idea to register on Sheffield Forum and advertise here as it's free!

Oooh, do you mean the one by the roundabout opposite Regent Court? That used to be the fish and aquarium shop?

If it's just you, and if you aren't a limited company, just call the organisation Hugh R~ (See me forget your surname!) I think "Lords of English", whilst a cool name, is sort of unnecessary, whereas going in your own name has a more intimate and open feel.

That's just me though, and asside from a crash course in how grammar works, like, where I'm actually meant to be putting comma, gee, that would be helpful, I can't really comment on the rest.

Hugh -

Do you want to discuss this with me - as regards business structure, sales channels etc? I've now got a fair bit of experience in doing this sort of thing. (and, heh, if you want to hire an office with me...) I have books and books on starting up - but any business really comes down to one thing - sales channels. You need to know what they are for your venture.

I don't like Lords of English as a trading or company name. It's far too pretentious and doesn't describe what you do. (That was my first mistake...)

As Tim suggests, trading as your own name is an option for you, but again, without sticking "english tuition" or something on the end doesn't really tell your prospect what you do.

Finally, don't expect a business to make much cash in the first two or three years. So it might not help your finances immediately, and once you become self employed they stop paying you benefits.

They stop paying you JSA under certain circumstances. Hugh, is this a topic that's worth me going into in any detail? I deal with a fair few Self Employed cases at the moment.

Oh, and as Phil says, having a name which mentions English Tuition is the bomb.

Politically, the government has recently spoken about doing less in translation services, so it follows that there should be increased demand for TESOL type services ( ... )

Suggest if you are hitting unis that you get resonable quality A5 / A4 posters done to catch the eye - many A4 white flyers around!

Willing to post said flyers on open notice boards - Malaysian students here at the moment - I can dig about and find out which Uni accom. they are in and see if I can smile at security for you to post flyers up.

I had some nice A5 flyers done at RedPrint http://stores.ebay.co.uk/RedPrintOnLine - Tim uses a local company to do his business cards and flyers (I can get details if you want)

GOOD LUCK!! :)
