Aug 02, 2008 13:53

Remember those sweet new WATCHMEN movie posters (based on the original 1986 ads) from my last post?

Warner's have thankfully released Hi-Def versions on the official WATCHMEN website, with no annoying "Omelete" tag attached :D

There is a load of little details in each of these posters, all relevant to the character and the GN/movie. Click each ( Read more... )

watchmen, comics, dave gibbons, comic con, film, alan moore, dc

Thank you! :D

If you've never read the graphic novel, you *really* should.
Hope all has been well with you?

Yeah, it's worth a read at least once a year :)
It's going to be a long wait for the film but a worthwhile wait i'm sure!

I was actually told to read the graphic novel by my English literature teacher but was never able to, but I've been keeping up with the production story and I can tell I'm at least going to love the film visually.

Should I read it first or see the film? In your opinion?

Your English Lit teacher knows the score. The GN is all kinds of awesome, with so many layers you will find new things each time you read it.

Hmmm... ultimately you have to understand that the theatrical version is going to be about two and a half hours long, with lots missing from the GN. Zack Snyder has pretty much stated that the "ultimate/directors cut/special edition" dvd release will be around four hours long. Thus, what you see in the cinema will not be entirely representative of the original GN or the full vision of Snyder's adaption ( ... )

Oh wow!

I think I would like to read it beforehand (partially because you look like you're having so much fun looking at the details) because you and a few other people have emphasised how detailed and multi-layered it is and been concerned as to how well it will come across on screen. And I do love me a late night debate.

Actually my teacher recommended it in the spirit of some work I was doing on anti-heroes and the collapse of the hero in literature as a basis for comparison with an analysis of A Clockwork Orange I was doing for my coursework. I never got into it at the time but I'm intrigued now and it'll be interesting to watch the film as part of the superhero genre in film. From what I've seen so far I got a real Bladerunner feel from it which really only makes me want to see it more.

Thanks for your time in your reply and I'll be sure to check in with you as I go. Now, to find it...

Besides loving the GN for what it is, you will no doubt have plenty of food for thought and subsequent late night debates, after you read this beauty :D you are not wrong either, I'm having more fun than should be legal with all the details! Hehehehe.

The reason your teacher recommended it to you is a very sound one. Rorschach and The Comedian are excellent examples of anti-heroes and the central figures in the deconstruction of the superhero genre ( ... )

This is really going to be awesome! I can't wait!

Tho as the trend seems to have gone with the Superhero movies recently, Australia has been getting them first. So I'll probably see it before you! XD

Awesome, unless they fuck up the story...

Which I don't think they wll :)

Actually Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands are getting WATCHMEN on the 5th March 2009, which means you'll maybe see it one day before the UK and the US get it on general release (they both have it released the same day - 6th March 2009). That doesn't include any advance screenings obviously. Again, due to time zones, the UK is going to technically see it before the US.

Saying that, Hellboy II doesn't officially open in the UK until 20th August, in Australia it's the 28th August. Cineworld Cardiff are putting on a special one day only advance screening this coming Tuesday 5th August - which we are attending naturally :)

Matters not who sees what first though really - I read WATCHMEN (and Killing Joke, and Dark Knight Returns and...) before you did! :P ;) XD

thanks for showing the changing clock! I didnt notice on my own.....

It looks a lot like that clock a certain sentific journal had a clock on its cover to represent the doomsday clock......so looked I it up and BAM- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock ...I found that: "The clock used in the Watchmen comic book series is a reference to The Doomsday Clock. On page 18 of issue #1, a newspaper on Adrian Veidt's desk bears the headline "Nuclear Doomsday Clock Stands At Five To Twelve, Warn Experts". "

I am guessing you already may have known this and made this connection...but I hadnt! So, thanks :)

Anytime :D Every succesive read through of WATCHMEN reveals new details and I love it when others pick up on them too. A few others to note are:

The bottom middle tv screen that Ozymandias is watching in his poster has the scientists setting that very same Doomsday Clock :)

The blood spatter on the smiley badge, in the GN, represents the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock. The blood spatter on the film version doesn't so much resemble the shape of the minute hand, but retains the same symbolism regardless.

The way NiteOwl II holds his wrist of his left hand, and the angle of his left arm is symbolic of him trying to prevent the Doomsday from arriving.
