A lot of people are getting deferred or rejected from the schools they would love to go to. Schools they would have done well in, schools that would most likely have benefited from students like the people in question ( Read more... )

I realize that I lost out to people with better numbers than mine. But the idea that we are determining our self-worth on a scale of 200-800 is repulsive, and the system needs to change. Clearly the colleges are differentiating between candidates because that is what the system calls for, but that doesn't make it right. The emphasis is no longer on learning, but the lengths that people will go to to get a better score than the next person. I don't think that is admirable ( ... )

The SATs and ACTs are important. An A in one high school might be easier than a B in anothe high school. Colleges need something independent of the High School, as in something standardized, to compare people with. I also think requiring people to write a letter about why they want to learn is rediculous. There are only a handful of answers and everyone's essay will end up sounding the same. America is actually a lot less about pure numbers than most developed countries. McGill doesn't take any essays. The French placement exam is much more important than SATs here.

It should be noted that the Bac is not multiple choice, it's all essays and short answers and the like.
