Buffy sighed. Dawn had been a huge pain lately. It seemed like just when Buffy needed most to be left alone she was there, popping up with her incessant questions and constantly bugging her about this or that, poking her nose into slaying matters worse than usual. Giles had nearly been ready to kick her out of the Magic Box last night when Dawn wouldn't stop following him around, asking question after question. When even Xander suggested that Buffy take her to the movies for a while, she knew something had to be done.

Knocking on her sister's door, she pushed it open only to be met with a question right away. “Hey Buffy, what class are Zithorian demons in?”

“That's none of your business. You don't need to be concerned with slayer stuff and you know it.”

“Well I'm asking, so tell me anyway.”

Buffy crossed her arms and glared at the pest. “Don't you have math to do?”

“Yeah.”

“Get to it then.”

Later that week Buffy caught Dawn at the Magic Box, paging through a book about Delquan love spells. When she saw the title of the book, Buffy grabbed it out of her hands and started to walk away, determined again to make sure Giles locked all the magic books up, after-Valentine's Day sale or not.

“Hey!” Dawn protested. “I was just looking at it.”

“Yeah, and I already told you to leave that stuff alone.”

“I'm not a little kid you know.”

“Well you're acting like a little kid, sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong.”

“Buffy, give it a break! It was just words on a page.”

“Yeah, and those are words that my little sister doesn't need to be reading.”

“Well, you don't need to act like I'm an albatross around your neck or something.”

“What?”

Dawn sighed. “Albatross around- you know, like a burden.”

“Hmph. Well you deserve it.”

“Hey!”

“You do. Admit it- you've been acting like a pain in the neck lately, haven't you?”

“No, I haven't.”
“Then what is it when you're constantly bugging me with questions about demons and spells and vampires?”

“It's called curiosity.”

“Uh huh. Curiosity only goes so far. You've been bugging me purposely these last few days, haven't you?”

“Well, you haven't exactly been the most welcoming person in the world, you know.”

“Just answer the question, please.”

“Fine. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to do a little research, okay? After all, I just wanted to know what was going on.”

“Did it occur to you that I might've let you read those books if you hadn't gone behind my back? You could've asked first.

Dawn snorted. “Like you would've listened to me, anyway. C'mon, Buffy, you would've told me I didn't need to be involved and you know it.”

“You don't know what I would've said!” Buffy tried to protest, but the look she got from Dawn made it clear that her sister didn't believe it anymore than she did.

She opened her mouth to try again when Dawn shrugged and said, “You don't want to let me read? Fine. I'll just go ask Spike. He'll tell me anything I want to know.”

“Dawn, how many times do I have to tell you? We do not have anything to deal with him unless we have to! He lies and steals and-”

“Yeah, he's a bad influence. But at least he doesn't treat me like I'm still a kid!” Dawn slammed her book closed and grabbed her backpack, then stormed out of the Magic Box.

“Dawn, get back here!” When the slam of a door answered her, Buffy scowled and started after her to make sure her sister was going home to sulk instead of walking into a vampire's lair. She'd have a talk with Spike later about not telling her anything.
