I loved M&C but I couldn't finish Post Captain, unfortunately.

You could also read Forester's Hornblower series, or the Bolitho series by an author whose name I cannot remember. They are both very good.

I can see why Post Captain wouldn't appeal to you. About four books in the series are more like Post Captain. The rest are much more like M&C.
I've heard of Hornblower's books as excellent. I'm already planning to read Song of Ice and Fire and the Lost Years of Merlin before I get to anything else.

Congratulations on finishing! Now you can wait a year, and read them again. ;-)

(I'm already plotting a major re-reading project for when I get back to the States.)

I wish I had something deeper to say upon the conclusion of the series, but basically I'm left with: I love Stephen! I love Jack!

Re-reading! Sounds fantastic, but I think I'm going to wait a long while because I have a lot of other books to read and I'd like to buy O'brian's books before I read them again. I figure I owe him that much.

When you get back to the States? WHEN IS THAT? Enquiring minds in Berkeley want to know what the heck your plans are. And how come you never answered the big long email I sent you a few weeks ago?
