Hmmm... you make a solid point. I never really thought of it that way, but it makes complete sense. Sterilize war so that "nobody gets hurt" and war becomes too easy to get into.
As for social advances vs. a hellish future, I'm afraid the latter is nearly certain. Human nature won't allow the former. We haven't had peace in the whole of human existance and we're not going to anytime in the future either. We just don't have it in us. Sad, I know, but I think it's the truth. So long as people hold different beliefs, and they should, somebody will hold their beliefs to be right and another's wrong. And some of those will defend those beliefs with violence. There's no changing that.
