Falwell redux

May 17, 2007 16:44

So maybe I was a bit harsh on the recently departed Jerry Falwell the other day. I read the transcripts from the interviews with Larry King from the past two nights, and if Larry Flint and Al Sharpton have good things to say about him, who am I to say anything if I never met the man. I do think he did a lot of evil in his time, but then so have ( Read more... )

I'm curious what those good deeds are that he did. I am not aware of any myself, but maybe I always just wanted to hear only what I wanted to hear.

I'm still infuriated about his comments re: Nelson Mandela/apartheid and also that the reason 9/11 happened is because of America's flagrant support of homosexuality. I think the man was a jerk, to put it politely.

Well on Larry King Live, Al Sharpton and Larry Flint were both saying he was a nice guy in person. Neither of them seem like the type to sugarcoat things. He said lots of things that I don't agree with, but I never did meet him in person.

Well, Al Sharpton has always been one to speak his mind. I can't imagine him saying those things about Falwell if they weren't true. And Larry Flynt, for crying out loud. I certainly do agree that he said and did some very hurtful things.
I'm not so sure about that Hitchens interview. He seems to be making a lot of statements that lack empirical evidence. I know that people do that all the time, but atheists should be held to a higher standard.

I have no problem with people following a religion just as long as they don't try to cram it down my throat and tell me I'm going to Hell for not believing in what they believe.

I do have a problem with people trying to make a quick buck off of people's faith and spewing bullshit and hate.

I'm still waiting for someone to prove to me that there is a God. So far no has been able to do that.

Well, nobody ever will prove to you that there is a God. That's not the way it works.

I certainly have a problem with Falwell myself, for the exact same things you mention. I just have a difficult time totally dismissing someone as a human being. Which if I were to ever do to anyone, it would be Falwell. Cheney would be a close second.

Maybe he was pulling the wool over the eyes of Sharpton and Flint. I know he was a liar, the Bakker stuff and that Clinton documentary prove that.

You know, I was watching Al Sharpton and others on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN talking about Falwell Tuesday night. I kept hearing, "I didn't agree with him on things, but I thought he was a nice guy", blah blah blah. I got so irritated and disgusted. I thought to myself, "wow. these people are full of shit!". Then Christopher Hitchens came on. That made my night!
