Actor Ruminations

There are some actors who make every movie better by appearing. Stealing slightly from theferret, if I were to rank movies on a scale from one to ten, the following actors would provide these bonuses:

Morgan Freeman: +1. A year ago, I would have said that Morgan Freeman was a +2, but he was only worth +1 in Batman Begins (because that movie was just so ( Read more... )

How do I keep forgetting Eddy? He was the whole reason I started noticing things like this.

I agree on Morgan Freeman because he's just awesome in everything he does BUT Ben Affleck and Tom Cruise? no, no, no. Ben hasn't really done a good movie since Bounce with Gwyneth Paltrow (the whole Jlo relationship really brought him down the scale) then Tom...well, he's good but I'm so tired of his cockyness...he's a little guy who goes around saying he knows everything about psychology and blah blah and he's lost so much with his scientology routine...seriously, he needs to stop. I think more than anything Tom has been lucky.
Jude Law I think is one of the best actors around, but I do think he was out there a little too much last year (or was it 2 yrs ago?)
Anyways, that's what I think and what we've discussed in my film classes.

Gary Oldman: +2

Gary is one of those really good character actors. The kind that only half way through the movie do you realize just who it is you are seeing on screen (if then). Gary even makes Harry Potter worthwhile! (I know I'm flamebait for that, but it's true!)

Not sure you've seen one of his movies. Here's the IMDB link.

Ian McKellan: +2

Do I even need to comment? IMDB.

John Malkovich: +2

Again...almost a no-brainer. IMDB.

Gabriel Byrne: +1

Gabriel is one of my personal favorites. He tends to play bad guys with a conscence and good guys with a secret. He has been in several of my favorite movies. If I run across a movie with him in it that I haven't seen, he's a reason to watch it. IMDB.

I completely agree on the Gary Oldman issue, he's so diverse in his abilities. I mean just recently he paralleled this unkempt crazy man in the Harry Potter franchise and the clean-shaven Jim Gordon in Batman.

Malky's a star for sure, but he's so pigeonholed in his roles these days that he's getting stagnant, which is unfortunate but I would still drop him to at best a +1
