It's probably how your hotel has their network set up. If it's one of those deals where you pay for a computer to go on-line, you'll need to access the network from the Wii browser and pay for your Wii to get on-line (which is usually for wireless networks, in which case you wouldn't even need the dongle to get on-line). Aside from that, you could be getting an IP conflict from what ever address the dongle assigns the Wii and whatever address range your hotel uses. It could be a firewall blocking the ports the Wii uses for updates and such (I have no idea if they're any different from the usual ones web browsers use).
In short, I think I'd need to be there and take a look at things to be much help ;)
