I agree entirely with your comments (I certainly always vote) except for one point: when putting too much power in the hands of one person, as in a mayoral election, I would have thought that thinking a candidate was a twit was a good reason to vote for them, because they would tend to be less dangerous than a politician who knew what they were doing...
