A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of "the redistribution of wealth

See, each side has their own perspective. The Democrats want equalization of the wealth with none of the work. Whereas the Republicans want to keep what they worked hard for(In some cases anyways.) and the equalization of wealth is not an option. Both sides have a valid argument, but the more appropriate action is to work hard for what you get and to keep it. Free ride may be nice, but there is no such thing as a "Free Ride". It costs one way or another.
That's not quite true. Many democrats are very hard working and very willing to keep working hard. It's just that hard work as a carpet cleaner doesn't yield the same reward as hard work as a doctor.
My father is a socialist. He has told me that doctors and the people who take out the garbage in hotels should be paid the same. He has also told me that we should be taxed 100% and that the government should provide for all our needs. My father votes democrat exclusively. They are the American socialist party.
I have no problem with giving to help others, but it must be giving. It must be voluntary. In this way the person who receives also gives something to the person who gives, it is moral and equitable. This also allows the person who is more productive to budget their resources so they can be even more productive so that they have more to give later.
Wow, I'm kind of surprised by this, dude. Only because it has ultimately nothing to do with being either Democratic or Republican. It's a cute anecdote, but it doesn't at all illustrate the difference between the two parties. It illustrates what I think a small portion of Republicans think is the difference. But then so does every "Barack Obama is black and a Muslim, no way he should be our God given American President!! Hyuk." email. Neither is accurate and both represent a piece of the Republican party, but I don't think either is a fair representation of the party as a whole. So yeah, I'm kind of surprised to see it on my friends list.
Well, since I am neither a Demo or Repub, I found this rather amusing. It is a joke afterall, and I'm sorry if you pulled any deeper political meaning out of it.
That's more or less what I thought when I was a republican for a brief time in the early 90s. If you believe the stuff they talk about (which I do on certain issues) then you get pretty disappointed after you vote for them and find out that they only talk about small government and letting people be free and accountable for their own actions.
You see, I actually believe in letting people live their own lives, republicans only believe in talking about that stuff in hopes of fooling us into giving them our votes. I do get sick when I hear most democrats speak about anything, so I have never considered voting for any of them, but I haven't voted for a republican in 16 years.
Sorry, dude, but earned G.P.A. in college does NOT equal socioeconomic circumstances. In theory, yeah, deducting a point off your G.P.A. for Audrey's sake would seem kinda stupid. But, suppose for a moment, that grade points are food, and Audrey was starving to death because she had a 1.0 G.P.A., and she probably deserved better, but the prof had decided to hoard 231 points for himself, artificially creating a shortage. Wouldn't you want some higher authority (say, maybe, the Dean) to do something about it? Or, using the same example (points = food/currency), maybe a few students managed to unfairly bilk the rest of the class out of their points, hoarding them for themselves in a giant ponzi scheme, which was perfectly legal because the prof "didn't want to interfere in the 'free market' of grade-points trading. Wouldn't you want to prevent the same sort of thing from happening in the future? Or, maybe said prof deliberately shortchanged Audrey because she was black. Or, maybe, the "young woman" of the story was awarded her 4.0 G.P.A

The problem is that our government wasn't designed with the intent to help the people. That is what your family, friends, and community are for. When the government comes in and starts taking care of people, the people become reliant on it, and the government continues to take care of the people more and more until the people are ready to sacrifice freedom and liberty for security and entitlement. The thing I don't like about social programs is that the government is robbing me (sure, they call it taxes) to pay for it. I don't mind helping people out, I just don't like being robbed. In fact, most people don't mind helping other people out, and although there is a wide media source to list the horrible events of the world, there is a lot of good out there too
