Basically, just about any band can sound good or bad, despite their skill, depending on who is "running sound" on the sound board(s).
Usually there is two separate sound technicians.
The "front of house" sound technician can adjust what the audience hears from the speakers (ie: how much bass is present or how loud the vocals are).
The artists communicate with the "monitor" sound technician what they want to hear in their monitors. This technician can adjust, for example, how much bass drum the lead vocalist hears in his/her own monitor. Neither the audience or any other band members will hear what is in that particular monitor.
