I just broke up with my old insurance company over the phone, from the office of my new insurance company.
Progressive insurance recently decided that they should reevaluate my credit score. Having found a lack of credit history, they thought it would be best to double my insurance premium.
That's right, in spite of a perfect driving record, no accidents, and having been with them for 6 years with not a SINGLE late payment, my insurance had to go up, because I haven't been buying crap I don't need with money I don't have.
HOW BROKEN IS THIS SYSTEM?? >=O
So I decided I was going to look for a new insurance company. I checked with several places online, including Geico and Allstate (both of whom, like Progressive, have amusing ads). They both gave me excellent rate quotes UNTIL they ran my credit. Again, the machine is fed improperly and I get bitten.
So I tried a different approach. On the advice of the sales rep from Allstate, I called AAA. The agent there was able to get me a much better rate through Mutual of Enumclaw. I will be paying more than I was at Progressive before they raised my rates, but significantly less than what they were changing it to, BUT I will now also have renter's insurance AND towing.
The best part, and the reason Sän insisted that I post this here. The agent said he could start the new policy on the 21st, when my policy with Progressive was up, but I thought it would be much more satisfying to cancel it immediately so they would have to send the rest of my premium back to me. Better yet, I called Progressive right then and there, while the AAA agent waited, and canceled my policy.
