It's cool. You meditate on the precepts, and take them up as koans. For instance: "I take up the way of not Killing." I meditated on it and this is what I came up with.
"I vow not to kill by cutting off my life in the TAO with Ignorance." Something like that.
There are 16 Precepts and then the four nobel truths for a toal of twenty vows. Each student personalizes their vows and then makes or purchases a rokasu. Its a neck worn buddha robe, sewn in a rice field pattern with a zen circle or ring in the strap part.
I knew I wanted my Buddhist name to have something to do with being rooted in the dharma but also to represent being imperfect. So my friend Joe found an old root (from the Community Urinal Hedge) across the street from my house. He is going to lathe it into my rokasu ring. I instructed him to leave it as gnarly and twisted as possible.
