In principle, a tap is an extremely simple device. Elegantly so. It is therefore somewhat surprising that they consist of so many different pieces when disassembled, and that the nomenclature used to describe these pieces is incomprehensible ( Read more... )

Did you keep the old one? Take that in and either compare or hand it to the counter guy and ask which you need. It's probable that they will say you can't get the right kind any more and you need to buy a whole new tap (what they told me re: the one in last flat in Edinburgh).

Well, the old one is back in the tap, being as useless as ever. We forgot to take it with us today when we went to buy paint, and so now it will have to wait until there's another time that we can leave the water switched off while we take them over there. It hasn't helped that my bike has been spending more time in the bike shop than on the road recently.

I collect taps. I have about forty. But I know none of these things. I just asked Ian as he has fitted new taps to his bathroom recently, but he says he is clueless too.
