So, I have been conducting research on child support, or more specifically, the current child support system. It's interesting and more than a little disturbing, at least to me. Basically, it starts with the establishment of the federal agency of the Office of Child Support Enforcement. There are several articles which explain the evolution and ( Read more... )

I don't mind paying for my kid at all. I do think I should be allowed the same discretion as married parents are afforded though, meaning that a transfer to the other parent should cover my portion of subsistence for the child and the rest of my spending should be left to my discretion as a parent. I also think that some credit should be afforded to me for the time the child spends with me, so if you're looking at a liberal visitation schedule that is say, 60/40 (40% of the time with me) I should receive financial credit for the expenses I will incur while the child is with me. Perhaps not 40% as it is arguably more expensive while the child is in school, but a percentage none the less ( ... )

My ex believes the money is HERS not the kids. She has been getting child support from one father or the other for most of her life.
I remember when her youngest boys father died and he started getting social security I told her that it was great we could start a savings account for him and when he got out of high school he could go to college.
Well she got angry and flat out said it was HER money and Travis never saw a dime of it till her turned 18 when the checks came in his name. She of course threw another fit till her paid her the money so she could pay her mortgage. Well once he stopped getting that money she had to refinance the house or lose it.
I didnt feel sorry for her in the least.

But I totaly agree with you on being compensated for the time the kid is with you. I got Nancy to do this once when I had Megan almost all summer.

Yeah, as I sit here and review what I've posted, I realize that I am a little bit bitter. Here's part of it. I'm remarried (been with her for 10 years now) and together we have 4 children. She received child support for one of them (which I'm proud to say she never had raised) when he was forced to pay it like a rat in a trap (he typifies why men have a bad wrap in the child support system). We made the decision for her to stay at home with the kids because we feel it is in all of our children's best interests. Even though I support a wife and 3 additional children (sans whatever child support we received whenever he was working) and had done so for 10 years, the court will not consider any of that when setting the child support amount for my biological child ( ... )
